Is it just us, or has Christmas come around extra quickly this year? Not that we’re complaining… With summer sunshine on the way, holiday cheer and quality time with family and friends just around the corner, we’re ready.
If you’ve bravely volunteered to host this year’s family Christmas, you’re in good company. Here’s a helpful timeline to make sure your holiday celebration runs smoothly — and that you get to enjoy it too.
One Month Out — Planning & Organisation
No planning is wasted effort — especially when it comes to hosting a holiday gathering. Start by locking in your food and drinks menu early. If family members are pitching in with sides, double-check who’s bringing what so you’re not doubling up or missing something. Communication is key!
Figure out exactly how many guests you’ll have, decide which dishes you’ll prepare, and jot down a shopping list (meat, seafood, Christmas pudding, big-ticket items) to finalise soon.
Three Weeks Out — Gifts & Presents
Whether you’re buying for your close family or extended relatives joining the gathering, now’s a smart time to get gifts sorted. If you’re doing a “Secret Santa” or kids-only presents, buying early means you can wrap and write cards without the last-minute rush.
Being organised with gifts helps tick off another box — and gives you peace of mind as the big day approaches.
Two Weeks Out — Planning & Setup
Now is a good time to plan seating and layout for when everyone arrives. Think about how many guests you expect, whether you’ll eat inside or outside, and if you’re doing a buffet-style dinner, map out where the food will go.
If your dining area isn’t big enough for all, consider setting up multiple tables (e.g. adults’ and kids’ tables) or moving part of the meal outdoors. The goal is everyone feeling comfortable — and ideally together.
One Week Out — Decorate & Get Festive
If you haven’t shrugged off the Christmas-tree-putting-up guilt yet — now’s your time. Get the decorations (and maybe a bit of music) happening. Decorating together is magic: it sets the festive tone and gets everyone feeling Christmassy.
Consider adding small touches for your Christmas gathering — like simple tabletop centrepieces or DIY decorations that match your vibe.
A Few Days Before — Food Prep
Do a final shop for perishable items, and pick up any meat or seafood orders by Christmas Eve. Start prepping dishes over the days leading up to Christmas: bake desserts the day before, pre-prep side dishes — so when the big day arrives you’re not scrambling.
A final ingredient check is always worth it. If you’ve followed the plan this far, you should avoid any last-minute dashes to the shops.
On the Day — Sit Back, Relax & Enjoy!
Once all the prep is done, all that’s left is to enjoy. Sip a drink, soak up the laughs, and soak in the festive atmosphere. You earned it.
